Deadly States is an educational interactive information visualization about modern day capital punishment in the US. It is suitable for a classroom setting or personal exploration.
Presenting data from the Death Penalty Information Center’s execution database, it places importance on showing the individuals behind the data. Great care was taken to present the data without bias or political agenda.
The visualization features two main screens:
● A Map overview, dynamically colored based on individual state
execution counts of the current time interval selection.
● An Individuals screen, which shows the same data in the
form of the names and ages of the executed individuals.
The visualization was developed to provide insight into the subject
matter, augmented by the following interaction possibilities:
● Time selection is made with a Multitouch Data Interval Controller,
which shows total US executions through time while providing
a reference of comparison to any active selection.
● The Map allows selection by state and the pinch to zoom gesture.
● The Individuals screen offers multilevel highlighting by attributes.
● Time and location selections are persistent between screens.
